DERBY EXPLOSION: DEMOLITION AND INVESTIGATION WORK UNDERWAY.
Demolition and investigation work is now underway at the scene of a possible gas explosion in Eden Street, Derby. Emergency services were called to the incident at around 7.24pm on Tuesday 10 June. One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains. A terraced property, which was significantly damaged during the explosion, and two adjoining properties that have suffered structural damage, are being demolished. A number of other properties were also affected by the explosion. The demolition of the main property will support the investigation into the cause of the explosion and due to the complexities of investigating alongside the demolition process, this is expected to take several days. Work is scheduled to take place between 9am and 4.30pm with the possibility that this may need to be extended in order to ensure the structural integrity of the properties. In order to minimise disruption to residents there will be no demolition work on site on Saturday and Sunday, but teams will resume from the site on Monday. At this stage it isn’t possible to give any specific indication in terms of exactly how long this work will take, however we will try and provide a clearer update should this become possible. Barriers around the properties for demolition will remain to allow for a safe working environment for those teams involved with the demolition and investigation. Thirteen properties and their residents remain impacted by the incident. All other residents have been able to return to their homes. Eden Street remains closed, however access for emergency services vehicles will be maintained where necessary. Impacted residents Officers from Derby City Council have been on site this morning engaging directly with residents. If you have concerns about your property, please speak to one of the onsite officers, and contact your insurance company or landlord. Any residents who need urgent social care support over the weekend should call Derby City Careline number on 01332 956606. People who are hard of hearing or Deaf please email DCCcareLine@derby.gov.uk or text 07812 300177. Anyone with any ongoing concerns with their gas supply should contact the Cadent Customer Liaison team on 0800 3898000. Cadent are currently experiencing a high volume of demand so people calling this number are asked to be patient. Further information can be found on Cadent Gas website at https://cadentgas.com/getmedia/025f7d7c-6d0c-4296-a739-127abea864a1/Our-Guaranteed-Standards-of-Performance-23-24.pdf Any issues with electricity supply should be directed to the onsite engineers. Residents cars Some residents' cars have been stranded on Eden Street since the incident. Teams have been working throughout the morning and have worked with residents to release those cars that can be moved from the scene. However a number of vehicles do remain at the site and are expected to over the coming days. Emergency services and responding partners understand the inconvenience and frustration this will cause those residents; however, their safety and the safety of teams responding and accessing the affected site is a priority. Heavy demolition equipment is on site, and this is affecting cars being able to be released. Thank you All emergency services and responding partners would like to thank the community of Eden Street for their ongoing patience and understanding. Teams have been working extremely hard since Tuesday evening to ensure their ongoing safety, minimise further disruption, and bring the incident to an end. We appreciate that for some residents recovery from the incident will take many months and beyond and further communications will be issued to residents as soon as more information is available. No general updates are planned for over the weekend. | ||
