To Hot For Hounds

As temperatures rise across South Derbyshire, we’re urging all dog owners to take extra precautions to keep their pets safe during hot weather.

🐾 Walking Dogs in the Heat

  • Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11am and 3pm. Choose early morning or late evening walks.
  • Hot pavement can burn paws — if it’s too hot to touch with your hand for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.
  • Carry fresh water, rest in shaded areas, and monitor for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.

🚗 Dogs Die in Hot Cars

  • Never leave a dog in a parked vehicle — even with windows open, the temperature can rise dangerously in minutes.
  • A dog can suffer heatstroke or die in as little as 15 minutes.

❗ What to Do If You See a Dog in a Hot Car

  • If the dog appears in distress (heavy panting, collapsed, unresponsive), call 999 immediately.
  • If not in immediate danger, call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
  • Do not attempt to break the window yourself. While well-intentioned, this can be classed as criminal damage and may lead to prosecution.

Let trained emergency services handle the situation — we are equipped to respond quickly and safely.

❤️ Let’s Keep Our Dogs Safe

Your dog relies on you for protection — don’t put them at risk in the heat. Spread the word and help keep pets safe this summer!
