As temperatures rise across South Derbyshire, we’re urging all dog owners to take extra precautions to keep their pets safe during hot weather. 🐾 Walking Dogs in the Heat - Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11am and 3pm. Choose early morning or late evening walks.
- Hot pavement can burn paws — if it’s too hot to touch with your hand for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.
- Carry fresh water, rest in shaded areas, and monitor for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.
🚗 Dogs Die in Hot Cars - Never leave a dog in a parked vehicle — even with windows open, the temperature can rise dangerously in minutes.
- A dog can suffer heatstroke or die in as little as 15 minutes.
❗ What to Do If You See a Dog in a Hot Car - If the dog appears in distress (heavy panting, collapsed, unresponsive), call 999 immediately.
- If not in immediate danger, call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
- Do not attempt to break the window yourself. While well-intentioned, this can be classed as criminal damage and may lead to prosecution.
