Possible Rogue Traders seen in Bakewell Area

Good Afternoon,

We have recently had reports of possible 'rogue traders' in the Bakewell area.

We are offering the following crime prevention advice to try and protect yourself and to share with any family members who might not be on social media.

🛡️ General Safety Tips
Verify Identity and Credentials

Always ask for official ID or proof of business registration.
Check if they’re part of a trade association (e.g., TrustMark, Checkatrade, or Gas Safe Register).
Avoid Cold Callers

Be cautious of traders who knock on doors uninvited or offer “limited-time” deals.
Use a “No Cold Callers” sign if appropriate. (these can be obtained from your local PCSO or Safer Neighbourhood Team
Get Multiple Quotes

Advise people to get at least three quotes from different traders before agreeing to any work.
Never Pay Upfront

Reputable traders won’t ask for full payment before starting work.
Use staged payments based on progress.
Use Written Contracts

Ensure all agreements are in writing, including scope of work, costs, and timelines.
🕵️‍♀️ Spotting Rogue Traders
Too-good-to-be-true prices
Pressure tactics (“We’re working nearby and can do it cheap today”)
No paperwork or refusal to give receipts
Unmarked vehicles or lack of company branding
Cash-only payments
📢 Community Awareness Actions
Report suspicious activity to Trading Standards or via Citizens Advice.
Encourage vulnerable residents to speak to family or carers before agreeing to work.
Share alerts via local neighbourhood watch groups or community boards.
Use social media to spread awareness of known scams or rogue traders in the area.

If you require any further advice, please contact Bakewell Safer Neighbourhood Team and they will be able to assist you.
