Think before you drink – don’t risk the drive 🍺❌🚗

Hi Resident,

The festive season is fast approaching – and that means Christmas parties, catch-ups with mates, and plenty of good cheer. But before the first drink is poured, there’s one thing you need to sort: how you’re getting home. This month, PCC Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts is encouraging those going out to enjoy a drink in our city, towns and villages to make sure they plan ahead to get home safely.

Don’t risk the drive

It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, especially when the drinks are flowing. But alcohol clouds judgement and jumping in the car after “just a couple” can have serious consequences.

Make a plan before the party starts

Whether it’s your work do, a night out in town, or a quiet pint with friends – there’s no room for last-minute decisions. Here are some simple ways to stay safe and get home without the risk:

🚌Check public transport – Look up bus and train times in advance. Services can be limited, especially during evenings and weekends, so plan ahead.

🚕Taxi sorted? Night sorted – Save the number or download the app and sign in. Pre-book if you can – it gets busy this time of year.

🚗Call in a favour – Ask a mate or family member to be your lift home.

🥤Nominate a designated driver – Stick to 0% or soft drinks and enjoy the night without the worry.

🛏️Plan to stay over – Book a hotel or stay at a mate’s. It’s safer and gives you even more time to catch up!

Whatever your plan is – sort it before the first round

Avoid the temptation to drive. It’s never worth the risk – to you, your mates, or anyone else on the road.

Have a great time enjoying all the great places Derbyshire has to offer, but make sure it ends safely. #DontRiskTheDrive
