Festive Period Crime Prevention Message for Business and Retail Premises |
Derbyshire Constabulary Retail and Business Crime Prevention
During the festive period, businesses often experience increased footfall, higher stock levels, and in some cases periods of closure all of which can make commercial premises more attractive to burglars. Now is the ideal time to review your security and take steps to reduce the risk of becoming a target.
Below are practical measures you can implement to help protect your business: 1. Strengthen Physical Security Ensure all external doors and windows are robust and fitted with high‑quality locks (e.g., 5‑lever mortice locks to BS3621). Consider laminated or filmed glass to make “smash‑and‑grab” attacks more difficult. Use internal grilles, shutters, or cages to protect high‑value goods. Install bollards or planters to deter vehicle‑enabled crime such as ram‑raiding. 2. Protect Stock and Cash Remove high‑value goods from window displays overnight and secure them in a safe or locked room. Leave tills open and visibly empty to deter offenders looking for cash. Reduce stock kept on site where possible and conceal stockroom contents (e.g., boarding or film on windows). Bank cash daily and vary routes/times where staff are transporting money. 3. Improve Detection and Deterrence Ensure your intruder alarm is fully functional and prominently displayed. Consider upgrades such as monitored alarms or smoke cloak systems. Check your CCTV has clear timestamps and that recordings are stored securely or backed up to the cloud. Use dusk‑to‑dawn or motion‑activated lighting to increase visibility around the premises. Lock all escape routes internally to prevent offenders using them to remove goods. 4. Train and Involve Your Staff Encourage staff to report suspicious behaviour, vehicles, or individuals “casing” the premises. Ensure only authorised staff have access to keys, codes, safes, and secure areas. Involve staff in reviewing security measures to increase ownership and vigilance. 5. Plan Ahead Review contingency arrangements in case of a break‑in, especially during periods of closure. Consider seeking advice from your local Safer Neighbourhood Team Police Community Support Officer. 6. Always Report Crime If you experience suspicious activity or become a victim of crime, please report it: 999 – if a crime is in progress or there is an immediate threat 101 – to report non‑urgent incidents www.police.uk – to report online #CrimePrevention #Strengthen #Protect #Improve #TrainStaff #Plan #Report #MakingDerbyshireSaferTogether
