This update outlines the progress made on the community priorities set for your area by Local Policing Inspector Leanne Craig, in collaboration with Safer Neighbourhood Supervisors Sgt Luke Adams and PCSO Supervisor Kerry Wallington-Waite. Community priorities are reviewed and set on a quarterly basis, guiding the focus of the Safer Neighbourhood Team’s activity.
In this update, you’ll find: • A summary of the previous priorities • The actions taken and outcomes achieved • The new priorities for the upcoming quarter
New priorities are determined by analysing local crime trends and incorporating feedback from you—the community—through engagement events, surveys, and direct contact. Mercia's Previous Priorities were: 1. To enhance road safety by addressing offences such as highway obstruction, speeding, and the anti-social use of vehicles. 2. To prevent and detect serious acquisitive crime, particularly offences involving motor vehicles.
Actions Taken: We’ve been working hard to keep our roads safe and respond to the concerns raised by residents. Here’s an overview of what’s been happening: We’ve been working alongside CREST to tackle speeding and improve road safety across the area. We continue to share safety advice through social media and Derbyshire Alert, particularly following a recent incident involving a stationary vehicle at the local level crossing. High-Visibility Patrols Officers have conducted several patrols targeting unsafe vehicles and driving behaviours. One vehicle was seized for being in a dangerous condition, and during school-time patrols, another was seized for being driven without insurance. Community Engagement We have worked with Community Speedwatch and held discussions with local councillors about road safety concerns. We also visited schools to educate pupils on the dangers and illegality of e-scooters—especially timely as Christmas approached. Long-Term Solutions- We are working with key partners, including Repton Parish Council, to develop longer-term strategies that improve both road safety and wider community wellbeing. Tackling Serious Acquisitive Crime:- As criminals often travel across areas, we have taken a proactive cross-border approach. A dedicated operation is now in place in partnership with the Central Neighbourhood Crime Team, focusing on both prevention and detection to keep communities safe.
Outcomes: Thanks to the continued work on these priorities, we’ve achieved the following: Several vehicles were seized— examples being one for being in a dangerous condition and another for having no insurance. We arrested a driver for driving under the influence of alcohol, and another for failing to provide a specimen for analysis. Community Engagement-We have spent many hours engaging directly with community members and key stakeholders. The actions of local officers show that they are actively patrolling and tackling the issues that matter most to you. We encourage everyone to continue reporting concerns—your information helps keep the community safe.
Dedicated Crime Operation As part of our targeted policing operation: • 19 arrests have been made • Around 800 vehicles have been checked • Over 200 drivers have been stopped
Officers have carried out numerous searches of people, vehicles and properties, resulting in the recovery of several vehicles. Recent examples include three separate pursuits leading to arrests and charges for burglary, public order offences, disqualified driving, and failing to stop. In one case, stolen property worth approximately £10,000 was recovered and returned to its rightful owner.
Working with the Central Neighbourhood Crime Team (which focuses on residential burglaries and robberies), we’ve been delivering targeted crime prevention advice directly to residents and through Derbyshire Alert. Victims and those at heightened risk are also referred to the Safer Homes Crime Prevention Service for further support and home security improvements.
** Mercia's New Priorities ** Following this review, the SNT has identified the following priorities for the upcoming quarter: 1. Parking and speeding concerns in Bretby and Newton Solney, focusing on unsafe or illegal parking and speeding. 2. Road safety improvements in Repton and Findern to enhance safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. 3. Preventing and detecting serious acquisitive crime, with a particular emphasis on offences involving motor vehicles.
Road Safety – Key Actions 1. To support this priority, we will: 2. Conduct regular high-visibility patrols in known hotspots. 3. Work with Community Speedwatch where appropriate. 4. Promote road safety through school visits and youth engagement sessions. 5. Take proactive enforcement action against obstruction, speeding, and anti-social driving. 6. Work with the Roads Policing Unit to deliver joint operations when required. 7. Collaborate with local councils/Highways to identify potential infrastructure improvements (e.g. signage, traffic calming). 8. Share updates and crime prevention advice via Derbyshire Alert and social media. 9. Publicise successful interventions to reassure the community and encourage reporting.
Acquisitive Crime – Key Actions 1. High visibility and plain clothes patrols based on crime trends. 2. Share crime prevention advice through Derbyshire Alert, social media and community events. 3. Promote security measures such as steering locks, CCTV and vehicle marking. 4. Engage with residents and businesses to raise awareness and encourage reporting. 5. Work with national teams (e.g., NPCC, Operation Opal) to disrupt organised vehicle crime. 6. Conduct stop checks and use ANPR where appropriate. 7. Work with local authorities, Neighbourhood Watch and security partners.
