Tips and crime prevention advice for protecting your vehicle against theft.
Relocation of alarm units Plug and play option makes disabling the alarm more difficult than the factory fitted location. These can be fitted anywhere on the vehicle making them more difficult to detect. These are specifically for 2007 models onwards.
Anti tamper door and bonnet hinge bolts There are two options available. Hinge kits incorporating back plates and captive nuts or fully machined replacement hinges with no access to the bolts from the exterior of the vehicle. Something that can be used with this modification on TDCI model is the bonnet cable guard that makes accessing the bonnet release cable much harder than the factory setup.
Pedal boxes An excellent visible deterrent that stops the foot controls being operated these can easily be fitted by a DIY mechanic and is one of the most cost effective mode of improving the security of your vehicle. Suitable for all defender models.
Steering wheel locks Another great use of visible security, less expensive than other security options. Designs that cover the whole of the steering wheel are more effective than those that only partially cover them as the steering wheel can still be removed. Suitable for all defenders.
Removable steering wheels A lock that covers the bolt to prevent another steering wheel being fitted. They are neat, small and do not require storage in the same way as wheel locks do when not in use. However are more expensive compared to a standard steering wheel lock.
Thatcham approved tracker/immobilizer. Multiple options are available from a number of manufacturers. Depending on the product it may use radio waves to transmit its location, GPS or a combination of both. Some models offer the availability to track a vehicles location on a smart phone and send alerts to the owner when it is moved.
Locking wheel nuts These are an option that should be considered due to the high value of tyres fitted to Land Rovers. This is an inexpensive security upgrade, however only protects the wheel and tyres of the vehicle.
