We’ve seen an increase in vehicle theft recently, including keyless car theft (also known as relay theft). This is where thieves use a device to trick your car into thinking the key is nearby, allowing them to unlock and start the vehicle – sometimes even when your keys are inside your home.
Here are a few simple steps you can take to help protect your vehicle 👇 👮 Keep your keys safe At home, keep your car keys (and spares) well away from doors and windows to reduce the signal being picked up. 👮 Use a signal‑blocking pouch Store keys in a Faraday pouch or signal‑blocking wallet. Make sure it’s still working and replace it if needed. 👮 Check your key fob settings Some vehicles allow the key’s wireless signal to be turned off – check your vehicle manual or ask the manufacturer. 👮 Use extra security Steering wheel locks, pedal locks and even a well‑used gear stick lock can put thieves off. 👮 Park smart If you have a garage, use it. If parking on your drive, park as close to your property as possible and consider motion‑sensor lights or CCTV. 👮 Watch out for suspicious activity If you see tow trucks or vehicles acting suspiciously, especially without clearly marked uniforms, report it to police straight away. A few small changes can make a big difference.
