Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many rural areas experienced a significant increase in visitor numbers. The Hope Valley, particularly Castleton, was no exception. While the area has always welcomed tourism, the volume of visitors rose to levels not previously seen. This increase has been positive in many respects, supporting local businesses and the wider economy. However, it has also brought challenges. In particular, there has been a substantial rise in vehicles being parked illegally, often due to a disregard for existing parking restrictions. In response, the local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) convened a multi-agency meeting in May 2024, bringing together the Parish Council and key partners, most notably Derbyshire County Council Highways, to explore practical solutions to address these issues.
The process has taken approximately two years to progress, requiring sustained effort and strong collaboration from all involved, particularly Castleton Parish Council. The ongoing problems have included obstruction of roadways, restricted access for emergency services and residents, and damage to the local environment
The introduction of red line restrictions is therefore a necessary and proportionate measure to better manage parking, improve road safety, and protect the area for both residents and visitors. In addition to the red lines, double yellow lines have been introduced where required, and the existing parking meters along a section of Buxton Road are due to be reinstated. Work is also ongoing to explore further options, including investment in improving public transport links to make them more accessible and user-friendly for visitors.
I would also like to recognise the support of local farmers and landowners in Castleton and Edale who, where possible, making their fields available for parking. This contribution makes a significant difference in helping to manage demand and reduce pressure on the village.
Please remember if you wish to report any parking issues in these areas, please contact Derbyshire County Council’s Civil Parking Enforcement Team, who are responsible for enforcement.
