Increase in motorbike thefts

We have identified a recent increase in motorbike and moped thefts across Ilkeston and the wider Erewash area. These offences often happen quickly and many stolen bikes are never recovered. Some are used in further crime or stripped for parts.

We’re asking all riders and residents to take a few simple steps to help protect their vehicles and reduce opportunities for thieves.

How to keep your motorbike or moped safe

Always remove the keys, even if you’re only leaving it briefly

Lock your bike every time you leave it

Never rely solely on the steering lock – these can be easily overcome

Fit an alarm – this can act as a strong deterrent

Use a disc lock to secure the front brake disc and prevent it being wheeled away

Use a grip lock (Sold Secure approved) to secure the brake and throttle controls

Use a cover – this helps hide the make and model and makes your bike less attractive to thieves

Property mark your bike and its parts to assist with identification and recovery

Security at home

Keep your motorbike, moped, or scooter in a garage or secure shed where possible

Improve security with:

A garage door defender or upgraded locks
Garage or shed alarms
Low-level dusk-to-dawn lighting
A ground anchor for added protection

Important advice

If your bike is stolen or targeted, do not put yourself at risk. Report it to police as soon as possible.

Don’t make it easy for thieves.
