Wildfire at Tintwistle Moor - Update from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS)

Glossop SNT - Wildfire at Tintwistle update from DFRS 

Firefighters and partner agencies continue to work at the scene of the wildfire on Tintwistle Moor, with operations currently focused across three sectors to identify and extinguish any deep-seated pockets of heat and reduce the risk of re-ignition.

Members of the public may still see small amounts of smoke across the moor. This is expected where isolated hotspots remain within the area already affected by the fire. As the surrounding vegetation has already been burnt, there is little risk of the fire spreading beyond the existing fire ground, and the fire remains contained.

The nature of peat fires means they can remain active beneath the surface for extended periods and require careful monitoring and treatment. Hotspotting operations therefore remain a key focus across the moor.

Crews will continue to maintain a presence on the moor, monitoring the situation and extinguishing areas of residual heat as they are identified, until all sectors can be safely handed back to the landowners.

• Future updates

We understand that our communities and those with an interest in the area will continue to want reassurance about the work taking place. 

For that reason, we will continue to provide updates on operational progress where necessary.

However, as our response has now been scaled back and the wildfire is no longer being managed as a Major Incident, these updates will now be less frequent and will only be issued if there is a significant change to the situation or when the formal stop message comes in.

Once again, we would like to thank our firefighters, partner agencies, landowners, local communities and everyone who has supported the response throughout this incident.

Over the coming days and weeks, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service will be sharing some of the stories behind the response and recognising the efforts of everyone involved.

Please avoid lighting fires or using disposable barbecues, dispose of smoking materials responsibly, take litter home, and report any signs of fire by calling 999 immediately.
