Community Speedwatch

Our Willington Community Speed Watch (CSW) team have been busy since the last summary at the end of May.  The team has held 10 sessions during June and July.  These were within the 30 mph speed zones on Repton Road, Findern Lane, Twyford Road (outside the village hall) and on The Castleway (opposite Ivy Close.) Sessions are held at different times of the day, including some early morning sessions and evening sessions, and include weekends. One of the sessions was undertaken in support of the national CSW day held on 15th July.

The 3 sessions held in June recorded a total of 555 vehicles coming into the village, of which 50 were reported to the police for excess speeding, including 5 local residents. For the majority of the drivers this was their first time of being contacted by the police as a result of a CSW session. The top speed recorded was 50mph outside the village hall on Twyford Road. That location also reported one of the highest speeding rates this year with just over 16% vehicles exceeding the 30 mph speed limit on a Saturday morning (6th June).

High levels of speeding also featured in July’s sessions.  Across 7 sessions 1702 vehicles were recorded coming into the village with 91 reported to the police for excess speeding, including 12 local drivers.  Again for the majority of the drivers this was the first contact from the police as a result of a CSW session, although for 2 drivers it was the third time they were contacted.  The top speed was 51 mph on Findern Lane and again a high offending rate of  16% was observed outside of the village hall on a Saturday morning.

Sadly these higher speeding rates continue a trend highlighted in the May summary. Half of the village sessions held in June and July reported speeding rates of between 11 to 16%.  As at the end of July 2026 the overall excess speeding rate across the village is 4.4%.  This is double the excess speeding rate we recorded in 2025 and also double the average rate across Derbyshire based on police data as at the end of June 2026.  

Our data suggests the volume of traffic has not increased across our village roads. As at the end of July 2025 we had recorded 8553 vehicles compared to 8039 at the end of July 2026.  The key difference is that at the end of July 2025 192 drivers had been reported while by the end of July 2026 355 drivers have been reported. While the large majority of the drivers contacted by the police are not local to the village, there has been an increase in local residents, rising from 21 at the end of July 2025 to 35 at the end of July 2026. Local drivers appear more likely to be recorded speeding at the Findern Lane and village hall locations than on the other village roads.

The data is used by Derbyshire Constabulary to determine enforcement locations by the Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST). A number of CREST sessions have been held on Findern Lane in recent months, resulting in 76 offences being prosecuted. The top speed on Findern Lane captured by the CREST sessions was 54mph.  Road safety is one of the key priorities for our local Mercia SNT who continue to support and work with the CSW teams across the region.

Thank you to all the residents who have stopped to chat or have left our volunteers supportive messages. That does help to sustain the team, especially during the hot weather.  It is also worth stressing that despite the disappointing increase in the numbers of speeding vehicles through the village, the majority of drivers do support the safety of village residents and fellow road users by adhering to the speed limits on our local roads.
