Safer Neighbourhood Team officers from across South Derbyshire attended Remembrance Sunday parades and church services today, (Sunday 8 November), joining local communities in paying tribute to the servicemen and women who have given so much in service to our country.
In Repton, police joined members of the Royal British Legion as they marched along High Street to St Wystan's Church on Willington Road. Veterans and members of uniformed organisations, including Scouts and Guides, took part in the parade, watched by residents who lined the route in quiet reflection.
The commemorations continued with a service at St Wystan's Church led by the Reverend Steve Short. Well done to the very talented young student who played the Last Post. It was a humbling privilege to spend time in the company of veterans and to listen to their experiences of serving our country and protecting the freedoms we enjoy today.
A huge thank you to a wonderful community first responder, kind-hearted members of St Wystan’s Church and a retired consultant doctor who assisted police in providing medical attention to two people during the service.
Following the laying of wreaths at the memorial, the parade marched back to the Royal British Legion for refreshments and fellowship. Teachers and students from Repton School also held their own commemorations, gathering in the Chapel and around the school grounds to observe a two-minute silence.
We would like to pay tribute to everyone who helped make the occasion so special, including those who created the beautiful poppy displays throughout the village. Particular thanks go to those responsible for the visually stunning display on The Cross roundabout in the heart of Repton.
We are also grateful to the volunteer stewards from the Royal British Legion who safely managed road closures throughout the village, and to residents and most motorists for their patience and support as the parade moved through the community. Sadly, and with keen disappointment, an impatient motorist decided to ignore a red light on a pedestrian crossing and had to be dealt with by police.
Once again, thank you again to everyone who attended - it was lovely to see you all.
Today was a powerful reminder that, across generations, we will remember them.
