Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

As 2019 comes to an end and 2020 starts, I wanted to provide you all with an update with regards to your local Neighbourhood Team. I am immensely proud of the team and how committed they are to keeping South Derbyshire a safe place to live. They work tirelessly over a large area to ensure that with limited resources, we maintain a visible presence and proactively deal with issues in the neighbourhood. You may have seen that on Christmas Eve, officers stopped a vehicle and came across a large amount of cannabis which has been seized and a male is now under investigation for possession with intent to supply cannabis. Even as I type this message, PC Holmes has just stopped a vehicle in Melbourne and is searching the occupant and vehicle for drugs under S23 Misuse of Drugs Act.

The team got out to as many Christmas events and Xmas Light switch-on's as possible and it was clear that not only was there a real community spirit in everywhere that we visited, but also that people were grateful for what we had been doing over the last year which is really good to hear. We’ve held some events of our own too, including hate crime awareness and tool markings for vans. I mention these two events specifically because they were poorly attended which was disappointing for us. We will always do our best to publicise these events and really encourage people to attend as these events are specifically designed with the public in mind and how best to keep you and your property safe. I’ll reflect over the coming weeks as to whether we got the time, date and location right for these type of events and how to increase engagement with future events.

Exact dates are still to be confirmed, but we are due to receive an uplift in Police Community Support Officers in the team which I am really excited about. They are our eyes and ears on the ground and they have done an excellent job in developing intelligence, delivering crime prevention advice and signing people up to Derbyshire Alert. If you don’t know what Derbyshire Alert is, you can find out more here: https://www.derbyshirealert.co.uk/. Our PCSOs have also been completing surveys with local residents which allows us to better understand your concerns and pinpoint areas where there are issues arising.

We have also increased our proactive capability in the area, with PCs on plain clothes patrols targeting criminals who are linked to burglaries, vehicle crime and drug use. We’ve already had some excellent results from this and I’m confident that there will be more results to come in the New Year.

All that remains for me to say is thank you. Thank you for when you call us to report that suspicious vehicle on the road or to report that youths are smoking cannabis in the local park. We rely on reports from the public and we thrive on maintaining a good relationship with the community. Do we always get it right? No, we don’t. But we learn from our mistakes when this happens. However, the effort and best intentions is always there from every one of my team, and I hope you feel the same if you have had cause to come across any of them.

I wish you all the very best for 2020 and look forward to working alongside you all to keep South Derbyshire a safe and happy place to live and visit.
