A Message from Trading Standards for Ilkeston residents

Alert message sent 19/05/2020 15:01:00

Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

Derbyshire County Council Trading Standards is warning residents in the Ilkeston area to be alert following the report of an incident involving a consumer who had an unsolicited call at the door today.  The caller was a trader who told him that there was something wrong with his roof.  He offered to repair it for £250, but when the resident refused, the price          came down to £150.  Fortunately the resident recognised this as a common scam.  Rogue traders often try to con householders in this way.  If the resident agrees to work, the 'traders’ soon find additional problems with the roof and the price rapidly increases.

Trading Standards advises against dealing with any trader who approaches you on the doorstep.  Most reputable businesses do not deal in this way.  If you think that you need work doing on your home you should obtain quotes from 3 or 4 reputable traders.  Derbyshire County Council provides a Trusted Trader scheme. All the businesses who sign up have been checked out by the Trading Standards team.  To find a Trusted Trader in your area, call 01629 533190 or visit www.derbyshire.gov.uk/trustedtrader.

Remember, you don’t have to open the door to anyone you don’t know.  If you do decide to answer the door, take the following steps:

•  Lock all of your other doors before answering the front door.  Some fraudsters work together, one keeps you chatting while another gets in through the back door.

 •  Stop – Think about whether you’re expecting anyone.

 •  Chain – Put the door chain on, look through the window or spyhole to see who's there

•  Check – Ask for an ID card and examine it carefully.

If you have any concerns about this matter you can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 2231133 or Derbyshire Police on 101.
