Man charged with attempted murder following collision in Derby

An 18-year-old from Burton-on-Trent has been charged with the alleged attempted murder of a man in Mercian Way, Derby, earlier this week.

The force was called at 10pm on Monday (19 July) to reports that a man had been injured in a collision between a silver car and a pedestrian in Mercian Way, close to the junction with Abbey Street.

The victim, a 19-year-old from Derby, was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

An 18-year-old man, from the Burton-on-Trent area, was arrested and has since been charged with attempted murder.

The man, who is not being named at this time, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court today (21 July) where he was remanded to prison and will next appear at Derby Crown Court on 18 August.

Following enquiries detectives have identified two witnesses who are believed to have witnessed parts of the incident – and wish to speak to them as a matter of urgency.

The first is the driver of a white van which was stopped at the traffic lights at the junction of Mercian Way and Abbey Street at the time of the incident.

The second is a pedestrian who is believed to have witnessed an altercation between a group of men before walking off in the direction of Monk Street.
