Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

Your Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) is urging shops not to sell eggs to young people after local residents have expressed concerns about “egging” incidents.

Officers have been visiting local shops and asking owners to stop selling eggs to children. Increased, highly-visible patrols will be happening throughout Mercia during the run-up to Halloween.

Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Team has been patrolling rural villages, including Repton, Willington, Findern and Stenson Fields today, (Wednesday 27 October), handing out posters warning against the act of flinging eggs, which can cause damage to property and vehicles.

Officer Bob, who patrols Mercia, says: “We will be out and about patrolling our local policing beats to curb antisocial behaviour linked to Halloween and the ‘trick or treat’ season, which happens each and every year.”

The poster, which states: “We do not sell eggs or flour to anyone who is under the age of 16”, also encourages members of the public to report incidents of egg or flour throwing if they see it in their local area.

Police are also asking parents to make sure children are not taking eggs and flour from family kitchen cupboards, as it is not always a shop where they procure the unsavoury household food items from.

The practice of hurling eggs at other people’s homes and property is disconcerting and it can cause considerable upset to those residents who have sustained such attention. If the egg is not cleaned off with some urgency, the inner liquid can erode certain materials. Parents should warn their children that if incidents are reported they will be investigated and the perpetrators will be dealt with.

To report egging incidents please call 101.
