Safe stolen from elderly mans home in suspected distraction burglary in Langwith Junction

Alert message sent 29/11/2019 13:25:00

Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

Our officers are investigating a burglary in Langwith Junction yesterday, which we believe has taken place while the victim was distracted in his garden.
A man called at the house of a 79 year old man on Haddon Place between around 9.45am and 10am on Thursday 28 November, and they went outside together to discuss some gardening work.
The man left and a short time after the victim discovered a safe, containing cash, had been stolen from his home.
We believe this man may have visited the previous day, and we have received other reports that two men, wearing high visibility jackets, had been driving around the area in a white van.
This may or may not be linked at this stage but we are appealing for anyone who may have noticed the man, noticed anything suspicious, or with information about the incident, to contact us.
We are also urging residents to be alert to unexpected callers, to not open the door to anyone you are not sure of. We would also advise people never to agree to work from people who turn up on the doorstep.
Safer Neighbourhood Team Sergeant Mark Church said: “Our advice is to not open the door to anyone who calls without warning, no matter what excuse they give. Genuine callers will not call unannounced, they will arrange an appointment or give written notice about work taking place.
“I would also urge people not to agree to work from strangers who turn up at your door to tout for business.  If you think there is work to be done then ask around for a few quotes first. This will reduce the risk of paying high prices for poor quality work and also can reduce the potential of residents becoming the victim of a distraction burglary.”
Sgt. Church added: “If they are persistent or make you feel concerned or uncomfortable then please contact the police immediately.”
If you have any information which you think you could help with our inquiries please get in touch on one of the following non-emergency contact methods.
