Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

Our officers in have been helping youngsters learn about road safety with the help of storytelling stones in the Heanor and Loscoe area.

They have been trialling the initiative with children aged between four and six years at Loscoe C of E Primary and at Marlpool Infant School in Heanor.

The idea came about following a chance meeting between local bobby, PC Dave Norcross, and resident Susan Davies. Susan and her daughter Sharron write and create story stones for children.

Storytelling stones help youngsters to listen and tell stories without using words on a page, or in this case, a presentation. They are decorated with pictures relating to the story, including characters, crossings and traffic lights.

PC Norcross of the Heanor and Loscoe Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are always eager to find new and innovative ways in which we can reach out to youngsters and help them engage with important messages on how to stay safe.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Sue who helped us write a story about road safety, featuring our own unique character, PC Pebbles. We read the stories to the children, and use the stones as props to bring that story to life and get them thinking about how the theme can apply to them when they are out about.”

If the pilot is successful then the idea could be rolled out across Derbyshire, and other safety themes incorporated.

PC Norcross added: “We’ve had some really great feedback so far and not is the project giving us an opportunity to meet with our local youngsters, but we ultimately hope that the advice we offer will help them to stay safe on the roads.”
